On the second day of the conference, Andreas Wlasak, Vice President of Industrial Design at Faurecia, opened proceedings by announcing that the company plans to open a design studio in Shanghai this year. "A design centre in Shanghai – a new place in China for 2010 – this is a commitment," he declared. Wlasak then asked what OEMs should look for in terms of visualizing the concept of ‘green' design inside the vehicle interior: "OEMs might look for 'visual' green – how can you make it visible that the vehicle is efficient and reducing CO2?" He believed real wood is one likely way of achieving this, as people want to feel natural surfaces, and he also envisaged translucent surfaces playing a key role in years to come.
Audi has kicked off development of a new performance-orientated crossover model to directly counter the BMW X6. Set to be called the Q6 when it reaches North American showrooms, the five-seat crossover is rumored to be based around the same all-wheel-drive underpinnings as the second-generation Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne, both of which use a short-wheelbase version of the Volkswagen Group's so-called Colorado platform that in long-wheelbase guise is also used in the Audi Q7. The first SAIC Roewe-MG Cup Automotive Design Awards China have been launched, with the slogan "Design Drives Dreams."
SAIC is calling for aspiring designers to demonstrate their talents by designing a future sedan, SUV or MPV for Roewe in 2020. With Roewe's position as a high-end marque, SAIC has highlighted that elegance and innovation as key considerations for entrants. The new design competition was officially announced by executive director of SAIC Technical Center Zhang Cheng at the carmaker's Shanghai-based Design Center.
